24 hours in Maastricht: the ideal schedule

| | |

A day in Maastricht soon feels like a mini holiday. The city consists of a combination of historic streets, good restaurants, unique boutiques, a wide range of culture and a joie de vivre that is palpable. Actually, one day in Maastricht is not enough to discover the city. But don't have more than 24 hours? Then we have put together a nice schedule for you to get everything out of your visit.

  • Shopping on Stokstraat

9:00 - Start the day with coffee and breakfast

Of course, it depends a bit on how you get to the city how you start your day. If you come by train, you'll start in the Wyck district. A cosy neighbourhood where you can go to many places for a good breakfast and a nice cup of coffee. How about a Scandinavian-inspired breakfast at BIKKE with smørrebrød, poached eggs, brioche dishes and fresh pastries. Expect pure flavours and homemade dishes with Danish influences here.

Prefer a classic croissant or fried egg for breakfast? At Le Pain Quotidien you get freshly baked sourdough bread, american pancakes, homemade granola and breakfast dishes with seasonal ingredients. That sounds like a good start to the day, right?

Tip: afterwards, take an immediate stroll through Wyck. The district is known for its local boutiques, vintage shops and atmospheric streets.

10:00 - Discover the historic centre

A visit to Maastricht is not complete if you haven't visited at least one or two sights. The great thing about the city is that everything is a short distance from each other. From the Wyck district, you walk across the Sint Servaas bridge, already a special attraction, to the historic city centre. Here you will find the famous square 'het Vrijthof' where you can visit the Saint Servatius Basilica and climb the tower of Saint John's Church. A must-see for anyone visiting the city. From there, walk on to the Jeker Quarter, where you will find the old city walls, the Helpoort and the Stadspark, among others.

Tip: Take the time to walk through the narrow streets without a plan. That's where you will discover hidden courtyards, special facades and local shops.

12:30 - Lunch like a local

In Maastricht, there is plenty of choice for a nice place to have lunch. Whatever your wishes, here you will find a restaurant that suits what you like. A great tip for a restaurant where you can enjoy an extensive lunch is Bar Oliva, located on Onze Lieve Vrouweplein. It is an atmospheric Mediterranean restaurant where you enjoy dishes you can share together. The menu is inspired by the flavours of the Mediterranean, including grilled meat dishes, fresh seafood, vegetarian options and matching wines. Doesn't a pasta al limone with lemon, ricotta, parmesan cheese and parsley sound delicious? Or how about the gambas al Ajillo, prawns with garlic, olive oil, spicy peppers and bread.

14:00 - Culture or shopping

Now it's time to experience Maastricht your way.

For culture lovers

As a culture-lover, you can do anything in Maastricht: discover exhibitions in the museums, go out to explore a historic site or join an interesting tour.

Museums

Maastricht has a rich museum offering where art, history and culture come together. From modern exhibitions in the Bonnefanten to photography, design and heritage in smaller museums, each location offers a unique experience. The short distances make it easy to discover several museums in one day and experience the city's cultural atmosphere to the full.

Sights

Take your time to discover Maastricht on foot and walk past places that each tell their own story. On the Vrijthof square, you'll immediately see how history and everyday city life come together, with monumental buildings and terraces always making the square lively. A little further along is Boekhandel Dominicanen, located in a former church, where old architecture and modern interpretation come together in a special way. The Saint Servatius Basilica also shows how strong Maastricht's historical character still is. Because these places are close together, you effortlessly discover different sides of the city during a walk.

Walk along with a guide

A guided city walk is a great way to get to know Maastricht better. During the walk, you will hear stories behind historic buildings, squares and streets that you easily pass by yourself. Prefer something more adventurous? Then we recommend the caves and Fort Sint Pieter . With a guide, you will discover the system of passages under the city and learn more about Maastricht's history as a fortified city. Especially the combination of nature, views and history makes a visit to the fort and the caves special.

For shoppers

Feel like shopping? You can do that in Maastricht like nowhere else. For the most exclusive and unique shops and boutiques, the Stokstraat Quarter is the place to be. In this stylish district, you will discover top international brands alongside exceptional local specialty shops. Here, you stroll past historic buildings, luxurious shop windows and through charming streets. The quarter combines elegance with the characteristic Maastricht atmosphere.

Maastricht is also home to lots of cool concept stores and speciality shops run by local entrepreneurs. Check out these shops, among others:

16:30 - Take a break: time for a terrace

After an afternoon of exploring, it's time for a drink. Find a terrace by the river Meuse or in an atmospheric street where the locals are. Order a local beer, a glass of wine or a refreshing mocktail and enjoy the view.

18:30 - Dinnertime!

Getting hungry already? Time to start looking for a place to dine. Luckily, Maastricht is known for its culinary scene. There is a restaurant for everyone: from refined gastronomy to cosy bistros.

Need a quick bite to eat?
At De Pizzabakkers Maastricht you'll enjoy thin, wood-oven pizzas with fresh ingredients such as burrata, truffle or prosciutto. Prefer Asian flavours? Then you'll be right at Oodles of Noodles, where you choose from richly filled noodle dishes and hot bowls full of vegetables, chicken or prawns. They are on the same street, by the way!
