Introduction
Vrijthof square is situated right in the heart of Maastricht’s historic centre. The square is surrounded by iconic buildings, including St Servatius Basilica, St John’s Church, the Spanish Government House and the Hoofdwacht. The rich history of this place is still evident in the monuments surrounding the square and in the important role that the Vrijthof plays within Maastricht.

From church forecourt to town square
The history of the Vrijthof dates back to Roman times. Archaeological research has shown that the remains of Roman infrastructure and early medieval cemeteries lie beneath the square. Around the burial church of Saint Servatius, the area developed into an important religious centre.

The name Vrijthof refers to the original church forecourt: an area attached to St Servatius’ Church which was also used as a cemetery. Over the centuries, this area gradually transformed from church grounds into the open city square that visitors know today.

A square with many faces
Over the centuries, the Vrijthof has served various purposes. It was a religious centre, a place where people gathered, and later also the setting for military and administrative buildings. These different periods are still visible in the buildings surrounding the square. It is precisely this combination of religious, military and administrative history that makes the Vrijthof one of Maastricht’s most distinctive spots.

Vrijthof square today
Nowadays, the Vrijthof is a lively meeting place. Around the square you’ll find terraces, cafés and restaurants, and various events take place throughout the year. For example, the Vrijthof is the setting for André Rieu’s summer concerts, the culinary event Preuvenemint and Magisch Maastricht Vrijthof in winter.

Vrijthof square is therefore not only a place where Maastricht’s history is on display, but also a square that continues to play a central role in the city’s daily life.
