Maastricht Museum

Be surprised by Maastricht's past.

More information

On the 1st floor of Centre Céramique, the hidden stories of this special city are told. This is done in Dutch and English, but also in Maastricht. Here you will discover Maastricht's past. The timeline of the permanent presentation takes you along five important themes in the city's history. From prehistory to factory town.

Impressive time travel
The time travel begins some 7,000 years ago, with the first permanent inhabitants. From there, we go to the Romans. They built a bridge over the Maas River here for the first time. Then we visit Maastricht in the early Middle Ages (from 500 to 1000 AD): a political-religious centre. And finally, via the fortified town of the 16th to 18th centuries, we arrive in the first factory town of the Netherlands in the early 19th century.

Un-Dutch city
Until well into the 18th century, Maastricht was more closely linked to the east, west and south than to the Dutch Republic to the north. As a result, Maastricht felt like a piece of foreign country in its own country. It is therefore logical that in the 20th and 21st centuries, the city evolved into a European city where knowledge and innovation are central.

Your Maastricht story
The museum's timeline takes you through all the periods mentioned. But there is so much more to tell about the city! Maastricht Museum retrieves these hidden stories and tells them further. Do you have another great story? Share it and who knows, it might get a place in the museum. Who chic is that?
