The Grotten Noord, cut into the marl with structure by block breakers, harbours a special piece of history. An Official Maastricht Guide takes you through part of the more than 80 kilometres of underground passages. The guide will tell you about the origin of the marl caves and the many stories and legends. For instance, it was a hiding place for Maastricht people when the French attacked the city, there was smuggling in World War II and there even used to be mushroom farms.
