Centre Céramique

On the border of Wyck and Céramique, Centre Céramique is located at Plein 1992. There is always something going on!

Centre Céramique gives space to an inspiring library, but also to a very current and valuable cultural offer. You can discover Maastricht's history through permanent and changing presentations.

It is an inspiring and vibrant place for everyone: Maastricht resident, visitor or tourist. Where you discover, meet, develop, share knowledge, be challenged, work, enjoy and relax. And all in an exceptionally beautiful building by architect Jo Coenen.

History of Maastricht

We show the history of Maastricht! We have several unique collections and great knowledge of: archaeology, historical books, Japanese prints and Maastricht ceramics (Sphinx, Société Céramique and Mosa).

This heritage belongs to everyone, which is why we now display the masterpieces from these collections as a whole with the library. On the 3rd and 4th floors, beautiful objects from our archaeology and pottery collections are on display. There are also two models of the city: the model of Roman Maastricht and the model of Maastricht in 1748. In four unique large 'viewing boxes', the 'Mestreech history' is told on the basis of major themes, such as production processes and child labour in Maastricht factories, a Frankish tomb, the Bicentennial of Maastricht (1204 - 1794) and the siege of the city in 1673 by d'Artagnan, Louis XIV and Vauban.

The library cabinets contain small presentations based on the surrounding books. At the cookery books, for instance, you will discover more about Roman cooking and see Roman tableware found in Maastricht. The educational books have beautiful old (and trendy again!) school charts and the war books have original guns manufactured in Maastricht. This and much more...

We present short stories, anecdotes and interesting facts to take you on a bird's-eye view of Maastricht's history. This format will encourage you to visit the city yourself, where there is so much more history.
