8 terraces in special places in Maastricht
Drinking special beer along the Maas. Lunch on a sunny terrace overlooking an old quarry. Or have a drink in a hidden courtyard garden in the city centre. Maastricht has more special terraces than you can visit in a day. Whether you prefer to overlook an 800-year-old city wall or the vast nature just outside the city: the Limburg capital has a terrace in a special place for everyone. We tip eight terraces in special locations in and near Maastricht.
D'n Hiemel
Nature, history and cosiness come together on D'n Hiemel's terrace. Drinking in the sun, you look out on the green city park, the old city wall and the beautifully restored Helpoort. This gate with two towers and a red, wooden extension is perhaps the most impressive of all the towers that were once part of the Maastricht city wall. The event hall's terrace is a good place to recover in the sun after a walk in the park or a tour of the historic highlights of the city centre. Will it be a Limburg flan or special beer with appetisers?

Chalet D'n Observant
From the terrace of the wooden Chalet D'n Observant, you overlook the cliffs of the ENCI quarry. The 150-hectare limestone quarry lies at the foot of Mount St Peter. From 1926 to 2018, lime was mined here and processed into cement. Since lime is no longer quarried, nature is slowly taking over the area again. With a drink in hand, you look out over a fishpond and the quarry in green surroundings. On the spot that played a major role in Maastricht's history, you can now enjoy peace and quiet, coffee and flan, or a beer and bitterballen. Fancy a nature adventure? Take a walk through an old corridor system, over limestone grasslands and along the clear blue lake.

Riverside Lounge
The name gives it away: the Riverside Lounge is located on the Maas. From the wooden terrace, you can see the river flowing quietly under the Sint-Servaas bridge. The view is not the only plus point of this stylish restaurant. The food there is delicious! The chefs are inspired by locally sourced ingredients of the best quality. The menu includes lounge bites to share, such as patatas brava with slightly spicy tomato sauce and black tiger scampi with red peppers and garlic. Big appetite? Order lunch or dinner. From vegetarian pasta to burgers to Limburg sour meat: you'll always find something tasty on the menu at this laid-back waterfront spot.

Petit Café Moriaan
Step onto the tucked-away terrace of Petit Café Moriaan and it is as if you have travelled to France at lightning speed. The oasis of green is in the centre of Maastricht and within walking distance of Onze-Lieve-Vrouweplein. Under the vines between old buildings, let yourself be pampered burgundy. Choose a classic French wine from the extensive wine list, or be surprised by a wine from a non-traditional wine region such as Australia or the Netherlands. Enjoy a cheese or charcuterie platter with your company on one of Maastricht's most romantic courtyards.

Slavante
At Grand-Café Buitengoed Slavante, you don't travel to France, but to 1846. The drive up the winding road is a trip in itself. If the weather is fine, find a spot on the terrace, but be sure to take a look in the historic lounge with high windows and two large chandeliers. The restaurant belongs to a small estate on the eastern slope of Sint-Pietersberg (St. Pietersberg hill). Because the terrace is so high, you have a great view of the Maas flowing through the Meuse valley from your seat. Go for chorizo croquettes with lemon mayonnaise or smashed avocado toast with goat cheese. One thing is for sure here you taste homegrown and regional products. Also be sure to try the wine made here, in the oldest vineyard in the Netherlands.

Café de Pieter
Small but nice, that's Café de Pieter. The terrace of the few-square-metre café is on the side, in the quiet Lang Grachtje. The seating here is against the oldest city wall. 'View of a wall' may not sound very photogenic, but you are looking at 800 years of history here. There are hollows and arches in the wall. Climbing plants and flowers contrast happily with the natural stone. Live music from a gypsy, jazz or brass band often sounds from the café. Order a Belgian abbey beer on tap and a 'Pieterplenkske' (tapas board) to share with your company.
-
Café de Pieter
Small characteristic artists' café with a very mixed crowd. In summer, one of the most beautiful spots in inner-city Maastricht, 'far' away from the bustle of 't Vrijthof. More info on Café de Pieter
City Brewery - Maastricht
Do you love beer? Then you must visit the Maastricht City Brewery. Not only will you dive into Maastricht beer history here, you can also taste local classics. How about Maastricht's speciality beer, the Maltese, or the 'Adventurous Gérard'? Beers have been brewed here for over 160 years for which even Belgians cross the border. Maastricht's brown gold tastes best on the terrace overlooking the river Maas and the old Sint-Servaas bridge. The murmur of the lively city centre sounds in the background and around you other bon vivants toast.
