Your partner or friend is in Maastricht on business and you’re tagging along. Whilst they’re at work, you have the day to yourself. Start the day on an active note

The Sphinx Quarter is definitely worth exploring. The large buildings used to house Petrus Regout’s glass and pottery factories. Until the mid-twentieth century, Sphinx was Maastricht’s largest employer. You can experience that history in the passage of the same name and opposite at Lumière by the basin. But there is much more to discover – from lovely shops to a rooftop bar, cinemas and even a park.

The most beautiful bookshop in the Netherlands

After all those tasty treats, it’s time for a short (city) stroll. On the other side of the city centre lies what is perhaps the most beautiful library in the Netherlands: Boekhandel Dominicanen. Browse through the endless collection of books or find the best spot for a photo. Many (amateur) photographers have been there before you. Head up to the first floor for the best view.

At the Coffeelovers café in Boekhandel Domincanen, you can take it all in whilst enjoying a cup of locally ground coffee from Blanche Dael. The roastery and tea-packing facility of this Maastricht-based brand are located in the Sphinx Quarter. Coffee lovers can take a guided tour there and enjoy some tastings.

Time for some relaxation

Fancy a bit of extra ‘me-time’? Then visit Sanctum Spa on the Vrijthof. With a swimming pool, hammam and sauna, you’re guaranteed to unwind completely. This hidden gem is truly worth a visit.
