With summer very much upon us, we’re all in the mood for an al fresco drink. Let’s enjoy the sun and the foodie heaven that is Maastricht. But you know what we absolutely love right now? Just how many places offer refreshing, non-alcoholic drinks! Here are some of the best places to go if you want to sit outside and sip on a non-alcoholic drink, homemade beverage, or freshly squeezed juice.
Head to the edge of the historic city centre, towards Sphinxkwartier and the newly revamped Frontenpark, and you’ll find a fantastic spot called De Brandweerkantine. This former fire station doesn’t need sirens to get your attention: just sit back and enjoy some excellent service and alcohol-free drinks! Their menu is famously fresh and innovative, ranging from Sicilian lemonade (highly recommended) to effortlessly cool, Berlin-inspired beverages. Its little sister, Café Zondag, can be found in Wyck. It’s another popular spot, with a similar vibe and menu.

Offering gorgeous views over the Meuse, NOON is an ideal place to grab an al fresco drink. It’s a bit hidden, but that’s what makes it so special. NOON is perfect for lingering away the hours until sunset (which is, of course, a nice extra). If you’re looking for a refreshing, summery drink, order one of the kombuchas – a fermented tea beverage that’s having a moment right now. You’ll have got through the whole selection before the sun goes down! Be sure to order some tasty bar snacks, too!

Preps is the best place to meet up for a nutritious breakfast, freshly prepared lunch, or healthy snacks and delicious takeaway coffee. Preps is tucked away in the historical city centre, but it’s definitely worth those extra few steps. This might be the restaurant serving the healthiest menu in Maastricht. On hot summer days, head over to the cool, shaded terrace and embrace the peace and quiet.

Café Zuid might just be the most popular al fresco bar and restaurant in Maastricht, filling up as soon as the first rays of sunshine emerge. Its popularity is no doubt thanks to its unique location along the water, next to De Bordenhal theatre, and in Maastricht’s architecturally stunning Céramique quarter. De Bordenhal is also the home of the Toneelgroep Maastricht theatre company. Try the iced coffee, organic juices, or a non-alcoholic beer...

Coffee roaster Blanche Dael is the mastermind behind the food concept of Coffeelovers, which has branches throughout Limburg. As this blog is all about al fresco spots in Maastricht, we’re keen to mention their branch on Plein 1992 – a majestic square that’s the ideal place to indulge in foodie goodness. Be sure to check out their range of homemade iced teas: they’re delicious, refreshing, and completely irresistible...

't Wycker Cabinet
One of the undisputed gems in Wyck (pronounced ‘week’) is 't Wycker Cabinet. During summer, head over to the ever-popular Wycker Brugstraat and sit down for a multi-course lunch complete with refreshing homemade lemonade. Big plus point: there are plenty of alcohol-free drinks on the menu!

STAN’s al fresco area connects Maastricht’s industrial side to its quaint marina. Come rain or shine, indoors or outdoors, this is the place to enjoy a huge range of drinks: from a classic orange juice to a more intriguing alcohol-free drinks, like a ‘butcha kombucha’. The ‘no hangover’ section of the cocktail menu is particularly impressive, and we’re glad to see it’s getting the attention it deserves! Be sure to order some scrumptious bar snacks, too!
