Welcome brunch - in Saint Peter's

After arriving and a smooth check-in at the stylish Hotel Fitz Roy, your morning starts off right with a nice walk. From the hotel, you walk via Vrijthof and Bredestraat towards the historic Jeker Quarter. Your route leads past the aviary in the Stadspark, until you arrive at Patisserie Peter Lemmens at the foot of the Mount Saint Peter. Here, showcases full of handmade delicacies welcome you. While you enjoy a sumptuous brunch, the famous Olivier Bonbons and other local creations tickle your senses: a tasty start to your day in Maastricht.

A dip into the past

Full of energy, you then dive into history with a guided tour of the Kazematten, located in Waldeckpark in Biesland. This network of corridors, once built for the city's defence, tells stories of underground operations during sieges and shelter from bombing during World War II. The cool, mysterious corridors take you back in time.

Walking - through green oases

Back above ground, your walk through Maastricht's green oases begins. You start in the Waldeckpark, a nice place to catch your breath. Then you walk past the'Berenkuil', once home to a real bear and now a remarkable reminder of days gone by. The route takes you further along the grounds of the Tapijnkazerne. Today, this former military base buzzes with student life and is known for its relaxed atmosphere. You conclude the walk at the Helpoort, a medieval city gate, located at the edge of the Stadspark (city park).

Maastricht-style enjoyment

For dinner, the Harbour Club in the Inner Harbour awaits, located in the industrial-chic Sphinx Quarter. Here you will enjoy fresh seafood and other culinary delights. In less clement weather, the atmospheric indoor location with arched ceilings, an old quay warehouse, offers a wonderful alternative. After dinner, end the evening at De Gouverneur, a special beer café with more than 250 special beers. Satisfied, retire to boutique hotel Fitz Roy, directly across the street. The hotel has a quiet courtyard garden where you can also go for a bite to eat or a drink. A perfect base for your discovery of Maastricht.

Day trip - to Aachen

After a fresh breakfast at the hotel, hop on the Three Country Train and leave Maastricht behind for the German city of Aachen. This ancient city just across the border was once Charlemagne's power centre and still exudes its imperial grandeur. At museum Centre Charlemagne, immerse yourself in interactive exhibitions that bring the history of the Carolingian Empire to life.

Aachener Prints

For lunch, discover the classic flavour of Nobis, right next to the imposing Aachen Cathedral. Here you will enjoy the famous Aachener Printen, as well as other German delicacies, such as sweet and sandwiches or delicious pastries. In the accompanying shop, you can stock up on Printen to take home: the perfect souvenir!

Discovering the city

The afternoon is all about exploring Aachen. Wander through charming alleys full of local boutiques, admire the impressive Gothic architecture and settle down on a terrace for a good cup of coffee. After an afternoon full of culture and shopping fun, you will leisurely board the Drielandentrein, which will take you back to Maastricht.

A bite, drink & dance

For dinner, slide into Harvey Kitchen & Bar, just outside the city centre. Here you will enjoy a burger of beef, chicken or avocado or another tasty dish. When evening falls, enjoy the jazz vibes at Café Forum in the cosy Jeker Quarter on Mondays, or an atmospheric jazz night at Founders Bar in Wyck on Wednesdays. End your evening with a drink at Petit Café Moriaan, the most charming café in the Stokstraat Quarter. Afterwards, walk back to Hotel Fitz Roy feeling satisfied.

Morning walk

Start your day fresh with an exploration of the Frontenpark, on the edge of Maastricht city centre. This unique park is a melting pot of urban greenery, historic fortifications and industrial heritage. You walk through the Hoge Fronten and the Lage Fronten, where especially in the latter area the traces of Maastricht's industrial past are still clearly visible. Lose yourself in the rugged beauty of the landscape, where past and present meet. Tip: explore the area via this walking route and be surprised by the stories this special nature reserve has to tell.

Enchanting flavours - at Neercanne

Got an appetite? Time for a culinary adventure. Take the bus towards the idyllic Restaurant L'Auberge, located near the imposing 17th-century baroque castle Château Neercanne. Here, your taste buds will be indulged with refined dishes served in an enchanting historical setting. As you savor each bite, you look out over the picturesque Jeker valley: a view as impressive as the course lunch itself. An experience you won't want to miss!

Guided tour through - the caves

In the afternoon, you explore the mystical Grotten Zonneberg in Sint Pieter. The guide will lead you through the vast network of underground passages, carved in marl and decorated with ancient wall paintings, where mysterious stories await you. The cool silence of the caves makes for an unforgettable experience.

A full evening's programme

In the evening, dine at the atmospheric Gio's Cucina in the city centre. Here, the warm Italian atmosphere welcomes you with authentic dishes, with the chef putting together the menu daily with love and passion. The evening ends with a performance at Theater aan het Vrijthof, the heart of the performing arts. Get carried away by theatre, music or dance. Afterwards, it is a short walk back to Hotel Fitz Roy.

To the Three Country Point: - Through the hills

On day four, your adventure begins with a bus ride through the picturesque South Limburg Hill Country: final destination is the Drielandenpunt in Vaals, the highest point in the Netherlands. Here you literally stand on the border of the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, with breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. Take a relaxing walk through the green scenery and feel the peace of nature embrace you.

Taste the good life

On the return trip to Maastricht, you will make a stopover in Vijlen for lunch at Vijlerhof, where the food and homely atmosphere will give you a taste of the good life in Heuvelland. You can also get off a few stops later in Gulpen and indulge at the Brouwlokaal, the eatery of the Gulpener Bierbrouwerij, Europe's most sustainable brewhouse. The Free Brewer's craft beers are a delicious accompaniment to regional dishes.

Experience and discover

The afternoon is all about experiencing and discovering. Visit Domein Holset in Lemiers and learn all about sparkling wine production, or take a guided tour at the Gulpener Bierbrouwerij. After the tasting, the rolling hills of South Limburg invite you for a relaxing walk. You finish the day with dinner at Restaurant Atelier in Gulpen, awarded one Michelin star. Fulfilled, you return to Maastricht for your last night at Hotel Fitz Roy.

Sacred art - and heavenly fries

Hotel Fitz Roy once again spoils you with a delicious breakfast. Reflecting on yesterday's impressions, your final day begins with a spiritual note in the Treasury of the Basilica of Our Lady. The impressive relics and religious art will make you reflect on Maastricht's rich historical heritage. For lunch, choose Friterie in Wyck, where the burgundy fries and homemade sauces are a tasty end to your adventure.

At Coffeelovers in Boekhandel Dominicanen, drink a nice cup of coffee in a former church with a magical atmosphere. For a nice souvenir of your trip, stop by the Maastricht Store, where you will find typical Maastricht products and gifts. You will end your five-day adventure with dinner at Rozemarijn, a popular place where the dishes are prepared with care and attention.
