Tapijnkazerne

For almost a century, the Tapijn Barracks was a restricted military site. The first buildings were erected between 1916 and 1919 around the central parade ground. Following the Ministry of Defence’s departure, the site was repurposed and the former barracks were gradually transformed into a public space for the city.

Where soldiers once lived and trained, students, residents and visitors now come together.

History with a new future
During the redevelopment, the character of the former barracks was preserved as much as possible. The historic buildings were given new functions, including for teaching and research at Universiteit Maastricht.

A special feature of the redevelopment lies underground. The three distinctive pavilion buildings surrounding the former parade ground are connected to one another at level -1. This made it possible to adapt the buildings for their new function, whilst above ground the original, separate pavilion layout remained recognisable and as much space as possible was retained for public green spaces.

Green spaces, education and community
The Tapijnkazerne adjoins the Stadspark and forms a green corridor leading to the Jeker Quarter. The site now comprises a mix of historic buildings, educational facilities, public spaces and hospitality venues.

The Tapijntuin is also situated on the site of the former barracks. Together, these various functions of Tapijn create a place where the military past is still visible, but where Maastricht’s everyday life now takes centre stage.
