Kazematten
Between 1575 and 1825, a network of corridors was created on the western side of Maastricht. Discover this ancient defence system with a guide.

Reason for creation
Once upon a time, kazematten were created as a defensive system. In 1575 and 1825, the kazematten were built in Maastricht West as a network of corridors and mine galleries. Many people worked very hard to excavate these corridors, all with the aim of being able to secure themselves from the enemy who wanted to conquer the city with brute force. When this happened, they could approach and defuse the enemy underground. In addition, Maastricht people experienced fearful moments here during World War II, sheltering from the Germans during air alerts. Something you might not be able to imagine today.
Musketeers
An important part of the history that took place in and around the kazematten has musketeer d'Artagnan as its protagonist. In the 17th century, the legendary musketeer even visited the kazematten. In the kazematten, you can still find a lot of information about him, in addition, you can come across imposing monuments to him in the Stadtspark and Waldeckpark. Will you go looking?
Bastion Waldeck
In the kazematten you will also find spots that served as listening and communication corridors to eavesdrop on enemies at the time. There are also several embrasures that show how violent things were in those days. That the kazematten are special does not go unnoticed these days. The Dutch television series Flikken Maastricht often uses the kazematten as the backdrop for a heroic scene.
