Helpoort gate
The only city gate still present in Maastricht and also the oldest city gate in the Netherlands.

The Helpoort gate is part of the first city wall, which was built after Henry I, Duke of Brabant, authorised it in April 1229. It is the only city gate still present in Maastricht and also the oldest city gate in the Netherlands. The gate was used as a defensive structure for about two centuries. It lost this function when the Nieuwstad, the area south of the gate, was walled off (second half of the 15th century). After that time, the gate was still used for various purposes: meeting place of the cloth makers or fullers, harness house, powder magazine and residence.
The city gate is home to the Fortress Museum. Here you will find tangible evidence of Maastricht's illustrious history. The small museum is definitely worth a visit. The entrance is medievally hidden on a little square next to the gate. Hosts are on hand to explain and answer questions.
