The Stadspark is one of the most important green spaces in the centre of Maastricht. Nestled between the River Jeker, centuries-old city walls and monumental trees, nature and history come together here in a unique way. The park took shape in several phases and still bears visible traces of Maastricht’s past as a fortified town.

From fortified area to city park
The origins of the Stadspark date back to the 19th century. The oldest part developed from ‘Onder de Boompjes’, a green space along the city wall that was laid out as a park from 1837 onwards. After Maastricht lost its status as a fortified town in 1867, more space became available to further expand the park. In the years that followed, various sections of the park were added, gradually giving the Stadspark (city park) its current form.

Its military history has remained visible. Medieval city walls, the Helpoort and other ancient fortifications are still part of the landscape and serve as a reminder of the time when this spot lay on the outskirts of the fortified city.

The Jeker: a blend of greenery and history
The River Jeker also plays a major role in defining the character of the park. The river winds its way past ancient walls, lawns and trees, and was once closely linked to the defence of this part of Maastricht. In the low-lying areas around the fortifications, water could be used to flood the terrain in the event of a siege.

For example, water, green spaces and the defensive structures in the Stadspark are still closely intertwined.

Special spots in and around the park
Due to its various stages of development, the Stadspark features a variety of spots, each with its own history. The park is home to, amongst other things, the Hertenkamp, which was laid out around 1920, and the former Berenkuil, which now serves as an arts venue. The monument to d’Artagnan also serves as a reminder of Maastricht’s military history.

On the site of the former Tapijn Barracks, the Tapijn Garden connects to the green spaces of the Stadspark. For the full story of these places, click through to their individual location pages.

Green spaces in the heart of Maastricht
Today, the Stadspark is a place for walking, relaxing, playing sport or socialising. The combination of the River Jeker, historic parts of the park, monumental trees and centuries-old fortifications gives the park a character that is closely linked to the history of Maastricht.
