In 1717 Guillaume Thyssen started his wine merchant in a stately home on the Grote Gracht in Maastricht. The building, from which the oldest cellars once belonged to the Maastricht fortifications, was and is ideal for storing wine. This is where the rich history of Thiessen Wijnkoopers started. Metamorphosis The last descendant of the family Thiessen, Joseph, died in 1907. Thiessen was then sold numerous times, extended and renovated. Thiessen Wijnkoopers kept growing and was acquired by Moraco in 2003, the investment company of Marcel Mourmans. A complete renovation of shop, basements, walls, offices and tasting rooms followed, without losing the authenticity of the beautiful building. Choosing, tasting and buying wine at Thiessen is still in particularly attractive surroundings. Shop The shop is the heart of our business: of course we remain a wine shop. Within walking distance of the Market and the Vrijthof you will find a fantastic range of wines: beautiful classics, undiscovered gems and exciting newcomers. In our cellars are a hundred thousand bottles stored, only the finest, award-winning, quality. Wine for every occasion and every budget. Almost too many to choose from. Vino Matic In our store you can try the Vino Matic: an innovative wine serving system with sixteen bottles of wine. By pressing the button the dispenser serves you a small glass of wine to tast. No fuss, no mess, anyone can do it, without supervision. Taste alone, with friends or business associates, it is very approachable. The wines are paid with a chip card, for sale at Thiessen Wijnkoopers. You can charge five euros, but also fifty to set up your own little tasting. Wine tasting Tasting at Thiessen Wijnkoopers is quite an experience. You will be guided through our magnificent wine cellars, it's own Vineyard, bottling room and the beautiful historic building. Then you tast wonderful wines under the guidance of one of our wine experts. More information about tours and wine tastings is available at VVV Maastricht.
