Alevtina Kakhidze: Windows, signs of peace

SCHUNCK, Heerlen

This exhibition presents works by Alevtina Kakhidze, addressing themes such as identity, the Russo-Ukrainian war, the complex dynamics between East and West, power relations, the role of capitalism, our consumer culture, and conflicts.

Ukrainian artist Alevtina Kakhidze, born in Eastern Ukraine, depicts her personal experiences with the Russo-Ukrainian war and questions the actions of the invading power in her artwork. Her art serves as a plea for peace and resistance against violence, often using natural elements as symbols of pacifism. In her installation at the SCHUNCK storefront in the spring of 2024, she reflects on consumption and possession in relation to armed conflicts.

Nine of her drawings, created shortly after the invasion of Ukraine by Russia in 2022, are exhibited on the second floor of SCHUNCK.

In the Sint-Pancratiuskerk, Kakhidze presents works by fourteen contemporary Ukrainian artists, exploring associations with concepts from the Catholic faith and investigating the impact of war and destruction on various forms of expression. The exhibition is titled 'What hinders a sermon becomes one'.
