The caves of Noord serve as the backdrop for an underground museum. With a lamp in hand, the group, accompanied by a Maastricht Underground guide, walks through the dark corridors, passing by the most remarkable inscriptions, drawings, and paintings. The guide tells accompanying thrilling and often humorous stories. Additionally, the Rijksbewaarplaats nr. 9 is visited, better known as the Vault hidden within this cave system.
This concrete bunker was built and outfitted at the beginning of World War II to secure the Netherlands' most important art treasures against air raids. About 800 art treasures, including Rembrandt's Night Watch, Potter's Bull, and Vermeer's Little Street, were stored here for 3 years. The underground marl passages have a cold and humid climate. An ingenious climate control system ensured that these vulnerable canvases remained undamaged. The guards' room and the space for the military police, who had to guard the Vault and the access tunnel, are also explored.
Finally, a look is taken into the technical room where the Vault's climate was regulated. The guide shares special anecdotes from both the occupiers and the resistance. In short, a tour of a unique heritage consisting of a mix of history, culture, and art.
