Private Tour Second World War underground

Maastricht

Visit the network of tunnels in St Pietersberg hill, which was used to shelter 50,000 people and house valuable works of art during the war.

This themed tour about the Second World War will take you thirty metres below ground. You will visit two adjacent tunnels that will give you a good impression of what things were like during the Second World War.

The guide will show you the area that was once used as a shelter for local residents and the area used to store the country’s most valuable works of art. A special safe was built to protect works of art including Rembrandt's Night Watch, which was stored here for four years. You will also hear stories about underground smugglers' routes and experience first-hand the innovative approach taken by Maastricht locals during the Second World War. The full tour of all locations includes a two-kilometre walk outside the cave.
