Stadspark (city park)

Maastricht’s Stadspark is not just any park. It lies proudly on the banks of Meuse and stretches almost all the way to the Mount Saint Peter. It nestles peacefully against the historic city centre, allowing you to admire and climb many of the old city walls. The park often serves as a backdrop for various events, but is usually a peaceful place to relax. Take, for example, the little lawn right in front of the old city wall, by the Hoge Brug. Also known as the ‘field by the cannons’. But a little further on, by the fountain, it’s lovely too – there’s even a small playground for the kids! Also highly recommended: take a stroll past the ‘Vogelkooi’ (birdcage) along the River Jeker and the Tapijn Barracks. There are plenty of spots to settle down for a picnic.

The Griend

A place for urban citytrippers. The Griend is mostly frequented by hip and sporty locals and students. There is a fantastic skate park (an architectural masterpiece) with a wide lawn overlooking the river Meuse. Partly because of the view of Landbouwbelang (creative breeding ground on the other side of the Meuse) and the accompanying street art, the Griend park gets that urban feel. A great place to have a picnic and meet special people.

Sint Pieter

Fancy getting out into nature? Then take a walk (about 15 minutes from the Vrijthof) to the Mount Saint Peter. After the steep climb, you’ll find an oasis of tranquillity. If you walk a little further, you can admire the viewpoint at the ENCI quarry. Descend the imposing staircase into the quarry and set off to explore a unique part of Maastricht. Both on the hill and in the quarry, you’ll find countless spots for a picnic. Where will you end up?
