Sint-Pietersberg nature reserve
You will experience peace, relaxation and enjoying nature together while visiting this special place, just a stone's throw from the city centre.

This southernmost part of the Netherlands located between Maastricht and Belgium is almost un-Dutch in beauty. You will experience peace, relaxation and enjoying nature together during a visit to this special place, just a stone's throw from the city centre. Natuurmonumenten has been the proud manager of this unique nature reserve since 1995. Meet the animals and plants in Sint-Pietersberg nature reserve!
The rare limestone slopes and unique microclimate make the area a unique paradise for plants and animals. At the Kiekoet, cast a glance into the Oehoe Valley and try to spot the rare eagle owl or spot unusual butterflies in the Popelmond valley.
Even though it is not actually a mountain, we call it that. That's also how it feels when you follow one of the hiking, cycling and MTB routes that run across Sint-Pietersberg (St. Pietersberg hill). At the head of the mountain is the Fort Sint Pieter, an impressive defence work for the city of Maastricht. Here you have a great view of Maastricht. From the viewing platform (yellow route) you have a breathtaking view of the ENCI quarry with its clear blue water. The viewpoint is always accessible between sunrise and sunset. The staircase to the quarry area has 215 steps. Dogs are not allowed on the stairs or in the quarry.
At the Visitor Centre on Wheels (Bezoekerscentrum op Wielen), foresters will be happy to tell you more about the area, its peculiarities, walking routes and all activities. You can also buy a nice souvenir of your visit. More information about the Bezoekerscentrum op Wielen and where to find them can be found on the website.
