Mount Saint Peter nature reserve

Just a stone’s throw from the centre of Maastricht lies a landscape that seems almost un-Dutch. The Mount Saint Peter nature reserve, managed by Natuurmonumenten, forms part of the European Natura 2000 protected area Sint Pietersberg & Jekerdal. Thanks to its limestone-rich soil, unique microclimate and varied landscape, Mount Saint Peter is one of the most remarkable nature reserves in the Netherlands.

Exceptional natural beauty
Natuurmonumenten has managed the Mount Saint Peter since 1995 and is committed to preserving this unique landscape. The limestone grasslands, flower-filled slopes and woods provide a habitat for rare orchids, butterflies and birds. Each season, the nature reserve reveals a different face, meaning that a walk here is always a new experience. With a bit of luck, you might spot the eagle owl – Europe’s largest owl – from the Kiekoet . Since 1997, the Mount Saint Peter has once again been a regular breeding ground for this remarkable bird.

This nature reserve is a popular destination for walkers, cyclists and mountain bikers. Along the way, you can enjoy panoramic views over the Meuse Valley and discover special spots such as Fort Sint Pieter, the ENCI Quarry Viewing Platform and the ENCI Quarry itself. Together, they tell the story of a landscape where nature, history and industrial heritage come together in a unique way.

During the season, forest rangers and volunteers from the mobile Visitor Centre on Wheels are on hand to tell visitors more about the area, walking routes and excursions. You can find more information on the Natuurmonumenten website.

Fun fact
Despite its name, the Mount Saint Peter is not geologically speaking a mountain, but a hill. However, due to its steep slopes and differences in elevation, the landscape still feels like a real mountain to many visitors.
