Formerly a landing place, a quay reinforced with wood. A Southern Dutch word for this was 'bat'. In Liege, the Quai de Batte can still be found.

From a water gate, the Batgate, bags of coal were carried into the city from Liège. The men who carried these on their backs became black with dust, as black as ravens. As these hard workers had a 'robust' reputation, naughty children were also called 'batteraof' in Maastricht.
