Fort Sint Pieter

With flying colours

Fort Sint Pieter stands proudly above Maastricht. With the Maastricht flag always flying, you can spot the highest point of the capital of South Limburg from afar, situated at the summit of the Mount Saint Peter. This unique and historic part of Maastricht was built around 300 years ago. Over the centuries, Maastricht has been besieged and conquered on several occasions. In 1673, city commander Daniël Wolf von Dopff decided to build the fort to protect Maastricht. Incidentally, the street leading to Château Neercanne (directly opposite the Mount Saint Peter) is named after its designer.

Pentagonal defence

What you’ll probably notice straight away is the fort’s pentagonal shape. From the end of the 17th century, the southern ramparts of Maastricht were defended from within the fort. From then on, any attack on the city from the south could be repelled. In 1794, the fort was attacked ‘from the rear’ by the French during Klèber’s siege. But the fort, built to withstand heavy assault, remained virtually intact. In the early 19th century, it underwent extensive modernisation and restoration to meet the requirements of the time.

Underground pride

When visiting the caves, a look at the Fort cannot be missed. Fort Sint Pieter is largely intact, but has also been restored in a special way in recent years. Of course, you can also enjoy an amazing view of Maastricht from the fort. In recent years, various catering establishments have settled around this special part of Maastricht. You can take beautiful walks, enjoy a delicious lunch and take the most beautiful photos.
