With flying colours

Fort Sint Pieter proudly towers over Maastricht. With the Maastricht flag always flying, you can see the highest point of South Limburg's capital from afar, located at the top of Sint-Pietersberg (St. Pietersberg hill). This special and historic piece of Maastricht was built about 300 years ago. Throughout the centuries, Maastricht has been besieged and conquered several times. In 1673, city commander Daniël Wolf von Dopff decided to build the fortress to protect Maastricht. The street towards Château Neercanne (right opposite Sint-Pietersberg (St. Pietersberg Hill)) is named after its creator, by the way.

Pentagonal defence

What you will probably notice immediately is the fort's pentagonal shape. From the fortress, Maastricht's southern ramparts were defended from the end of the 17th century. Any southern attack on the city could be repelled from then on. In 1794, the fort was attacked 'from the back' by the French, during the siege by Klèber. But the fortress built against heavy force remained pretty much standing. In the early 19th century, it was still considerably modernised and restored to meet the requirements of the time.

Underground pride

When visiting the caves, a look at the Fort cannot be missed. Fort Sint Pieter is largely intact, but has also been restored in a special way in recent years. Of course, you can also enjoy an amazing view of Maastricht from the fort. In recent years, various catering establishments have settled around this special part of Maastricht. You can take beautiful walks, enjoy a delicious lunch and take the most beautiful photos.
