ENCI quarry vantage point
From the viewing platform you look into the ENCI quarry and see the lakes with the deep azure colour, which is due to the reflection of the blue sky in the depth of the water.

Because of the marl quarrying, the continuation of the former Luikerweg has disappeared; the platform symbolises this continuation anno now. From the platform you look into the quarry and see the lakes with their deep azure colour, which is due to the reflection of the blue sky in the depth of the water. The deepest point of the quarry is at 5m NAP and the Maas is at 45m NAP here.
We owe the origins of this quarry to the ENCI ( First Dutch Cement Industry). From 1926, extraction of the very lime-rich marl for the cement industry started here in the heart of Sint-Pietersberg (Mount Saint Peter). 900,000 tonnes of cement were produced here, the ENCI factory's striking chimney towering high above the landscape. From 2018, marl mining stopped and nature was given extra space here again thanks to Natuurmonumenten.
