6 must-sees in Maastricht according to local Chazia

Quiet but cosy. Authentic but with a foreign feel. Burgundian and casual, but also luxurious culinary enjoyment. Maastricht's contrasts attract people from all over the country. Presenter, radio producer and writer Chazia Mourali bought a flat in Maastricht and alternates the hustle and bustle of the Randstad with the peace and nature of Maastricht. 'People here are friendlier, more polite and more open than people in Amsterdam. I've loved chic and chic all my life, and the Maastricht people know better than anyone how this lifestyle works'. She takes us to her favourite places in Maastricht.

Meet Chazia

Chazia Mourali was born in Paris and moved to the Netherlands in her second year. She studied French, worked in television, writes columns and a book, and has her own radio programme on NPO Radio 1. In her programme Goed Ingelichte Kring, she covers topics such as politics, culture and science. She won an award for 'The radio moment of 2022'. In her spare time, she cooks healthy dishes for her family and enjoys visiting the opera. Thirty years ago, she fell in love with Maastricht. 'This is France 2.5 hours away.' From then on, she dreamed of a half-timbered house in the Heuvelland region, but chose a more budget-friendly alternative in Teuven, Belgium, where she lived for 15 years. 'In Amsterdam at the time I had a balcony of 5 square metres, in Teuven suddenly a whole meadow.'

In corona time, she bought a cottage in Maastricht, which is easily accessible by public transport from her other hometown of Amsterdam. 'I now have best of both worlds. I love the canals of Amsterdam, but could never let go of Maastricht, it feels like home.' She loves the elegant burgundy restaurants, the streets that breathe history and the foreign feeling. 'I really think the Rechtstraat is the Paris of Maastricht.'

The favourite spots - by Chazia

Bold - Rooftop bar

The view from rooftop bar Bold reminds Chazia of that in New York's Brooklyn. She prefers to visit Bold at lunchtime. On the 8th floor of the Sphinx building, you can enjoy breakfast and lunch during the day and cocktails, wines and delicious snacks in the evening. With views over Maastricht at any time of day. Chazia likes to combine a visit with a film at film theatre Lumière or shopping at Loods5, both of which are also in the Sphinx Quarter. 'This side of Maastricht is fairly undiscovered, but the whole district is great. There's a hip, 21st-century vibe, which is very different from the chic and fancy in the city centre.'

Piece of Cake

Chazia's heart beats faster not only for her native France, but also for England. She loves London and high tea. In Maastricht, she prefers to enjoy an extensive English high tea with her daughter at Piece of Cake. 'It's fancy here, but not pretentious and not too posh. It's festive, with chandeliers, brocante chairs and cakes.' You can also enjoy sitting in the garden on sunny days. The complete high tea with as many different delicacies as possible is her favourite. 'And the in-house teas are so delicious, especially the flavour Jardin des Merveilles.'

Harry's

For a touch of Paris, Chazia goes to Harry's, a brasserie in Wyck that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner daily. 'It's urban chic there, really Maastricht. It's sophisticated without being posh. With a beautiful wooden floor, a lovely house smell and birdsong in the toilets. 'Here I imagine myself in Paris,' says Chazia. 'The staff are so sweet' and serve photogenic dishes prepared with fresh seasonal produce. As many ingredients as possible come from the restaurant's own 2000m2 vegetable garden in the beautiful Jekerdal on the southern edge of Maastricht. With new dishes on the menu every week, you never have to order the same thing twice.

Inner garden of - Sint-Servaasbasiliek

'You don't have to fly to Bali or Thailand to find serenity, you can also just find it in the inner garden of Saint Servatius,' Chazia says. The cute little garden belongs to the Saint Servatius Basilica, built on the tomb of the city's patron saint of the same name. The imposing building in the city centre is probably the oldest church in the Netherlands. Stroll past the pink roses growing against the walls and enjoy the peace from a wooden bench. 'There is a sacred calm in places like this. For centuries, people have come here to pray and reflect. For me, such places are about love and positivity.'

Witloof

Chazia prefers to dine at Witloof restaurant, which she says is located in one of the city's most romantic streets. 'Witloof is run by two nice young people. It is a place with soul and a nice atmosphere," Chazia says enthusiastically. The restaurant, which serves only typical Belgian dishes, won the Dutch Design Award and other prizes and scored in the New York Times' top 15 of 'the 100 trendiest restaurant concepts in the world'. All this fame has not made them walk beside their shoes, because, according to Chazia, the place is still "just pure. Under the Maastricht roof, in-house gins are distilled and unique beers are poured. 'The food is real comfort food and here I feel like a child staying with grandma. My favourite is witloof with fries'.

Statue of Ezeltje (Donkey)

An oddball in this list: a donkey. A statue of a donkey at the Ezelmarkt in the Jekerk Quarter. Donkeys were never really sold here and possibly the name comes from 'eselen', the knocking of sheets. The sculpture has been here since 1976. Chazia says of it: 'there is something very sweet about the donkey, with the water behind it and the buildings around it. It is as if time stood still here and you step into another time. On Maastricht's footbridge, people often take selfies, but this donkey really is another hidden gem.'

Local tips - by Chazia

For the foreign feeling in Maastricht, Chazia says Château Neercanne is the place to be. 'I come here for the view and the food,' she says of this only terraced castle in the Netherlands. At Buitengoed Slavante, she likes to get some fresh air. 'Here are beautiful hiking trails with the most beautiful views in the Netherlands. In the Grand-Café they serve delicious soup and salad'. Within the city limits, she tips Le Souk, 'a hidden gem in the Jekerk Quarter. They have the tastiest Tzatziki and olives in Maastricht here. I get snacks from the shop and eat them in the Stadspark or Charles Eyckpark.'
