After Maastricht's heyday as an industrial city, many factory buildings became vacant. These industrial buildings have mostly been given modern repurposings. You will also find many churches in the city that were no longer used for their religious function and were therefore repurposed.
Religious buildings
In Maastricht, you will find dozens of churches and monasteries that lost their religious function and now have a new use. One unmissable example is Boekhandel Dominicanen, known as one of the finest bookstores in the world. Two hundred years ago, the Dominican Church hosted its last mass. Since then, it has had several functions. In 2006, the church was completely restored, including the original wall paintings from the 14th century. The Kruisherenhotel is another fine example of redevelopment. This monastery building of the Crusaders dates from the 15th century. It now houses a luxury design hotel.

Industrial heritage
The industrialisation of the Netherlands once began in the Sphinx Quarter. Today, most of the buildings have been given new contemporary and creative uses. In the old timber factory, you will find the Muziekgieterij, Lumière film house and Bureau Europa. On the other side, in the striking Eiffel building, you will find The Social Hub, Bold Rooftopbar and Pathé Cinema, among others. Also don't forget Loods 5, a beautiful home furnishing shop in an industrial setting that will make your eyes pop.
