Mosae Forum is situated right in the heart of the historic city centre. It is a modern shopping area between the Markt and the ‘ Meuse ’, with architecture that immediately catches the eye. The two sides of Mosae Forum look very different. This is no coincidence: the design blends in with its surroundings.

From the Markt to Meuse
Mosae Forum was created as part of a major plan to regenerate the area between the Markt and the Meuse . Among other things, the project provided more space for shops and improved the connection between the historic square and the river. In 2007, ‘ Mosae Forum ’ was officially opened.

As well as shops and restaurants, homes and the town hall have also been given a place here. There is a much bigger story behind this change. You can read more about the plans and the history of this site in ‘ Mosae Forum: trial and error on the Markt’.

Two architects, two faces
On one side lies the historic Markt, on the other the ‘ Meuse ’. This contrast is reflected in the design. The Liège-based architect Bruno Albert designed the section on the Markt. The grey natural stone and clean lines complement the historic Town Hall across the square.

For the section facing the ‘ Meuse ’, the Maastricht-based architect Jo Coenen created a completely different design. Here, the colours are lighter and the shapes are rounder and more playful. A glass sky bridge connects the two sections. The striking canopy above the shopping area is also part of the design.

Shopping in Mosae Forum
Mosae Forum combines shopping with living, working and dining. The shopping area is largely covered and features a mix of shops, restaurants and shops for everyday essentials. There is a large car park beneath the complex.

Even the name tells you something about the place. ‘Mosa’ is the Latin name for the ‘ Meuse ’ (market place), and ‘forum’ means marketplace. The ‘ Meuse ’ and the nearby ‘Markt’ thus come together in the name ‘ Mosae Forum ’.
