International university city
In Maastricht, you quickly get a sense of being abroad. This is not only because of the southern location and burgundian lifestyle the city is known for, but also because half of Maastricht University's students come from abroad. In fact, Maastricht is the most international university city in the whole of the Netherlands.
University of Limburg
In the 1960s, the closure of the Limburg mines prompted Maastricht to breathe new economic life. In 1969, the De Jong government awarded Maastricht the eighth medical faculty in the Netherlands. The foundation of that faculty in 1974 was, according to some, the city's salvation. The then Rijksuniversiteit Limburg attracted intellectual people to the industrial city and monumental monasteries and church buildings were given new life as university buildings.
Historic university buildings
The Medical Faculty started with 50 students in the old seminary of the Jesuit order on Tongersestraat. Today, the Economic Faculty is in this old monastery, which is definitely worth a look even for non-students. Other interesting university buildings are the Former Govermnent Building, the stately Minderbroedersklooster, the Bonnefantenklooster and the former Tapijnkazerne.

Maastricht University
In 1996, the name changed from Rijksuniversiteit Limburg to Universiteit Maastricht. In 2008, it became Maastricht University, a name befitting the university's international character. The language of instruction is now English at six faculties. Furthermore, the motley mix of student nationalities creates a cosmopolitan atmosphere in and around the university buildings.
