Markt square

In the 13th century, the Markt developed into the economic heart of Maastricht as the city expanded beyond its oldest city centre. The Markt remains a lively place where locals and visitors come together to shop, visit a market or take a seat at one of the outdoor cafés.

From trading square to town square
The name ‘Markt’ refers to the square’s original function. For centuries, goods have been traded here and people have gathered. Whilst the Vrijthof developed primarily as a religious and administrative centre in the Middle Ages, the Markt grew to become the economic heart of Maastricht.

Over the centuries, the square’s appearance has changed. Buildings gradually gave way to the spacious square as we know it today. In the 17th century, the Town Hall was built in the centre of the square, and it remains the Markt’s most recognisable landmark.

The heart of Maastricht
The Markt still plays an important role in the city’s daily life. On Wednesdays and Fridays, the market takes place here, and at weekends the square is used for the antiques, second-hand and curiosities market. The Markt also serves as the backdrop for various activities and festivities throughout the year.

The square is also home to the Minckelers met de Vlam monument Minckelers met de Vlam, which has become one of the Markt’s most famous landmarks.

The Markt today
Around the Markt, you’ll find shops, cafés and restaurants with terraces overlooking the square. On the north side, the Markt connects to Mosae Forum, where shops, restaurants and car parks come together.

The Markt is therefore not only a historic site, but also a square where its original function is still evident: a meeting place where people shop, trade and enjoy city life every day.

Fun fact
The Friday market on the Markt has around 400 stalls, making it one of the largest markets in the Euregio.
