Plein 1992 square

Plein 1992 forms the lively heart of Céramique. The square takes its name from the year in which the Maastricht Treaty was signed, a significant milestone in European history. On the site where the Société Céramique pottery factory once stood, there is now a contemporary city square where culture, architecture and social interaction come together.

The heart of Céramique
Around Plein 1992, you’ll find a mix of culture, restaurants and modern architecture. This is home to, amongst other things, Centre Céramique and Theater de Bordenhal, whilst the outdoor cafés lend the square a lively atmosphere. What’s more, a short walk across the Hoge Brug takes you to the historic city centre in just a few minutes. In this way, Plein 1992 forms a natural link between modern Maastricht and the centuries-old city centre.

Bronze tiles bearing the year 1992 and the € symbol have been incorporated into the paving. They serve as a reminder of the Maastricht Treaty, which marked an important step towards the introduction of the euro.

From factory site to city neighbourhood
Where Plein 1992 now stands, the site of the Société Céramique pottery factory once stood. After the factory moved out, the area was redeveloped into a modern urban neighbourhood with space for housing, culture and leisure. As a result, Plein 1992 has become a place where Maastricht’s industrial history and modern city life come together.

Fun fact
The location of the former Parma Bastion is also marked in the paving of Plein 1992. This bastion was once part of the fortifications that protected Maastricht. In this way, the modern square serves as a reminder not only of European history, but also of a section of the city’s old defensive line.
