Remote working in Maastricht? Do it!
Maastricht and remote working prove to be a golden combination. During the week, the city is even nicer to visit than during the weekend: less crowds at hotspots, shorter waiting times at museums and restaurants that are cosy without being packed. Ideal for those who bring their laptops and combine work with a city break. To experience how that feels, we invited remote work experts Alieke and Daniëlle from Working Remotely. They explored our city like true digital nomads and share their findings below.
Discover Maastricht during the week: - work and holiday
For many Dutch people, Maastricht feels like a little piece of foreign country. The hills, the gentle dialect, the Burgundian atmosphere: it has something genial you won't find anywhere else in the Netherlands. For those who like to work remotely and discover new places, this is exactly what makes the city so attractive. And during the week there are additional advantages: peace, space and affordable accommodation.
The advantages of a weekday trip:
- Favourable hotel rates
- Fewer queues at activities and restaurants
- Extend your weekend without giving up days off
- An inspiring workplace
Sunday: arriving and tasting
The journey to Maastricht is comfortable by train. From the centre of the country you can be in the far south of our little chick in about 2 hours, which is ideal! Once arrived at the Townhouse Hotel, within walking distance of the city centre, an initial exploration of the city follows. Which ends with a culinary highlight: cicchetti (Italian tapas) at Il Bacaro. A delicious start to our days in Maastricht!

Monday: working and walking underground
After a good breakfast, the working day starts quietly in the hotel lobby. Because there are fewer guests on weekdays, it is quiet enough to concentrate on work. After lunch at Coffeelovers Plein 1992, where half of the café is laptop-friendly, a special activity is scheduled: a tour of the Grotten Noord. Despite what the name suggests, these are not caves, but an old marl quarry with kilometres of underground passages. People took shelter here during wars and even Rembrandt's Night Watch was temporarily stored. Fascinating and definitely worth a visit.

Tuesday: laptops, art and of course: vlaoj
Also this morning, the hotel lobby offers a fine workplace. A productive session is followed by lunch at Koffie bij Joost en Maartje. The place is busier than other workplaces, but those who don't mind that can come here to work just fine. Late afternoon, culture takes centre stage with a visit to the Bonnefanten museum, where modern and classical art alternate. And of course: you have to taste real Limburg vlaai (flan) - after all, you can't find that anywhere else in the Netherlands!

Wednesday: last working day and trip home
The last morning is divided between the hotel lobby and the hotel room: useful for online meetings where a quiet environment is just that little bit more important. This is followed by a work session at Fixed Gear Coffee, where window-facing workstations provide nice views while working. It's quiet and everyone works with focus. And all that work makes you hungry: here too, we order a delicious lunch that is a nice break from our working day.
