Building bridges for the Pilgrimage Of Relics
Written by: Ludo Diels
In the light of Maastricht's centuries-old towers, roads and bridges, where every stone breathes history and the streets carry stories, the city is once again awakening to a celebration deeply rooted in its soul: the Pilgrimage Of Relics. From 12 to 22 June 2025, the theme 'Be a Bridge Builder' will resound through the city like an invitation. A call to connect, heal and build together a world where tradition and modernity reinforce rather than exclude each other.
Bridges over time
The Pilgrimage Of Relics, a tradition dating back to the Middle Ages, exudes the spirit of Saint Servatius, Maastricht's first bishop. His tomb, hidden in the foundations of the imposing Saint Servatius Basilica, is at the heart of this seven-yearly celebration. But the Pilgrimage Of Relics is more than an ode to the past; it is a living monument, a search for what unites us. And Maastricht would not be Maastricht if this festivity did not unfold in shining beauty.
The theme 'Be a Bridge Builder' has a poetic power. At a time when divisions seem to prevail, the image of the bridge offers hopeful symbolism. It invites encounter and understanding, an outstretched hand across the chasm of differences. It is an opportunity to celebrate and strengthen our commonality. In Maastricht-with its ancient Roman bridge-that connection across the Meuse is ingrained in the character of the city.
Treasures of faith and art
During the Pilgrimage Of Relics, the treasure chambers of Saint Servatius' Basilica and Basilica of Our Lady open their doors like never before. Here, among gilded reliquaries and jewel-encrusted monstrances, you can feel the breath of centuries. These works of art, once created out of deep devotion, tell stories that transcend the boundaries of time and faith. They touch on something universal: the human need for beauty, meaning and connection.
Another highlight is the exhibition at the Maastricht Museum, which opens on 13 March 2025. Here, the rich heritage of the Pilgrimage Of Relics will be placed in a contemporary context. How can these ancient traditions inspire us in an age of rapid change? The exhibition seeks answers and invites visitors to reflect. This is not a museum visit like any other, but a dialogue between past and present.

A city as backdrop and inspiration
Maastricht itself is more than a backdrop; it is a protagonist in this story. The city, with its warren of narrow streets and squares, is steeped in history. The city's many churches, monasteries and chapels bear witness to a rich religious tradition. But these places are not just silent witnesses; they are constantly being brought back to life.
For instance, the former Dominican church is now an impressive bookshop and St John's provides space for concerts and exhibitions. The old convent of the Sisters Under the Arches is a place of contemplation and hospitality. Even Maastricht University has found shelter in sacred buildings, so centuries-old walls now help shape the future.
The recent renovation of the Walloon Church shows how religious heritage can be renewed with respect for the past. This building, which provides space for worship services, concerts and cultural gatherings, is a living example of how bridges can be built between generations and communities.
The mission of heritage
However, Maastricht's rich religious heritage also brings challenges. How do we preserve this immense cultural capital and keep it relevant for future generations? The 2024 symposium 'Blessed with Stuff', held at the Bonnefanten explored this question. The conversation revolved around the role of art and relics in a changing society: how could we ensure that these treasures continue to inspire?
Relics, works of art and monuments are more than objects; they are bearers of stories and symbols of a shared history. They require care and attention, but also new ways of looking at them. They invite us not only to preserve, but also to renew.

The Good Life
The Sanctuary Day fits seamlessly into the idea of 'the Good Life'. It is a celebration of life in all its facets: spiritual, cultural-historical and social. It is a moment of stillness and reflection, but also of looking forward. It reminds us that we can all be bridge builders - not only during these 10 days in June, but every day.
In 2025, Maastricht will not only be a city of tradition, but also a city of hope and connection. The Pilgrimage Of Relics invites us to build a bridge to the future together. A bridge that connects us not only to each other, but also to the timeless values that make us human.
