Discover the Maastricht gem Château Neercanne
Maastricht is often not directly linked to nature reserves, beautiful hiking trails or peaceful locations. That's what you go into the hill country of southern Limburg for, right? Nothing could be further from the truth! You don't have to walk far for this, as the area we will introduce you to today is about 10 minutes from the city centre. Highlight of this romantic and peaceful part of Maastricht: Château Neercanne!
Terrace Castle
Neercanne Castle is a so-called terraced castle. It sits proudly against the hills and overlooks the Jekerdal through which (you would almost not expect it) the Jeker flows. Château Neercanne is completely built of marlstone and really worth a visit. Not only for the splendour you can behold, but also because of the restaurant, the auberge and the wine cellars.
How to reach Château Neercanne?
How to get to this gem? In this blog, we will tell you how to reach Château Neercanne via a fantastic walk and what you will encounter on the way. Walk from the city centre via the Stadspark to the Jekerdal. This small but beautiful nature reserve borders the Sint Pieter residential area. As the name suggests, this neighbourhood lies at the foot of the Sint-Pietersberg (St. Pietersberg hill). Walk along the picturesque Mergelweg towards Kanne and turn right at Hoeve Nekum - a Maastricht winery. The monumental Hoeve Nekum wine estate has been occupied by the Bollen family since 1934. Since 1988 there have been vines on Hoeve Nekum's land. The little bridge before the farm is very instragammable. Here you will find a picnic table and meet other hikers.
From this spot you can already see exactly what we are talking about: the insane view over this pearl of Maastricht. In early summer, you'll find thousands of wildflowers here. In the distance, you can see the Apostelhoeve - also a well-known Maastricht winemaker - and to your left..... You must fall silent for a moment. Because when you gaze at this castle, you doubt for a moment whether you have landed in Maastricht or in a fairy tale. Both is in fact true, because Château Neercanne is fairytale-like.
We take you...
What can you find in this extraordinary castle? We tell you all about it, but you will only discover the real experience when you walk or cycle there yourself. This castle is part of the Oostwegel Collection, managed by the Oostwegel family. An ambitious (hospitality) family from South Limburg who, day after day, with their passionate team, make a difference by taking their visitors into the gastronomic world in their special locations. Walk up the hill at Neercanne and you will find:
