Maastricht Street Art Route
Distance 3.0 km | Duration 2 hours
Start: Borderless Cooperation
End: The Swell Pit
When you think of Maastricht art, think of ancient treasures, architectural gems and collections full of cultural gems. Not for nothing does the city attract world-famous events like TEFAF. But Maastricht also has a special, always up-to-date collection that is often overlooked: street art. Art in public places, made with brushes, spray cans, stickers and markers, by both known and unknown artists that tell the city's story.
With the Street Art Maastricht route, you will learn to 'read' the city in a whole new way.
About the route
In the Street Art Maastricht route, you will learn to 'read' the city. Street art in Maastricht has its origins in the punk scene of the 1970s and 1980s, coming from the turbulent Randstad towards the Catholic South. Squatters from Amsterdam brought with them the spray cans, while from Rotterdam came the stickers. Art soon evolved from critical cries and tags to complete works of art by writers claiming their name and fame with creative combinations of letters and characters.
Tags, throw ups and complete works of art
The Maastricht Street Art route takes you to the cradle of street art in Maastricht. Through some iconic pieces, you will learn to read the city, discover 'the places', meet the artists and learn the added value of street art and its significance for the city.
Let's go!
The route starts with a reminder and then takes you to the very first place where artists could legally perform their skills in Maastricht. From here, you walk through the quirky and unpolished Sphinx Quarter. Via the Gashouder (an illegal spot) you walk to De Krul and the Muziekgieterij where you clearly see the added value of street art for the city - courtesy of one of Maastricht's most famous artists.

The Hall of Fame - and on

Here you can clearly see the different styles of (local) legends - some of them have been active for more than 40 years! And with that knowledge, you walk from one end of town to the other in no time. Along the way, you have to pay attention, because the tags, throw-ups and stickers are everywhere. Which one do you see the most?
