In the heart of Frontenpark stands the Gashouder, a striking circular building that serves as a reminder of Maastricht’s industrial past. What was once a gas storage facility is now a venue for art, culture and events.
From gas storage to a new purpose
The Gashouder was built in 1956 to store town gas for Maastricht’s energy supply. When the city switched to natural gas, the building was no longer needed. Instead of being demolished, the Gashouder was given a new lease of life as a municipal monument and a venue for cultural activities.
A building that is constantly changing
The Gashouder is regularly used for art projects and events. Its exterior is also constantly changing. New graffiti and street art regularly appear on the large circular wall, meaning no two visits are ever the same.
