TOMATO Maastricht

Right in the heart of the lively Koestraat, you’ll find TOMATO: a modern pizza and pasta bar. The owners are young entrepreneurs Kenny and Charlotte. They’ve created a popular spot for both locals and visitors. The menu isn’t complicated or overly formal, but simply features really good pizzas, fresh pasta and a glass of bubbly for that authentic Italian feel. But which pizza should you try here? The menu features both classic favourites and more modern combinations. For example, the ‘Pizza Burrata and Truffle’ is popular thanks to its creamy burrata and truffle flavour, whilst the ‘Pizza Mortadella and Burrata’ with pistachios offers a more contemporary Italian combination. Prefer something a bit more unexpected? Then the ‘Goat’s Cheese Pizza’ with goat’s cheese, aubergine and honey comes highly recommended for its blend of savoury and sweet flavours.

De Pizzabakkers Maastricht

We’ll stay on Tongersestraat for a little while longer. A little further down the road, on the other side of the street, you’ll find De Pizzabakkers. In the premises formerly occupied by Donnatello’s, Peter and his team have been baking thin, crispy Roman-style pizzas according to their own recipe since 2022. The open kitchen forms the heart of the restaurant: you can watch the pizza chefs at work.

The menu features twelve different pizzas, a changing ‘pizza of the month’ and a variety of antipasti and dolci. The pizzas are topped with fresh, mostly authentic Italian ingredients and are renowned for their thin, crispy base. What makes De Pizzabakkers extra special is that it’s also the perfect venue for group dinners, drinks receptions and events. From long tables with shared dining to wine tastings, comedy nights and DJ evenings: it’s much more than just a pizzeria.

Il Giardino

Il Giardino is situated on the charming Onze-Lieve-Vrouweplein. Toscanella Apuana

In the Wyck district lies Toscanella Apuana, a cosy Italian eatery where authenticity takes centre stage. Here, you can taste the passion for pizza in every bite. The classic pizzas are prepared according to authentic traditions, with thin, crispy bases and fresh ingredients. If you fancy trying something a bit different, why not opt for a pizza with charcoal dough? It might sound a bit strange if you’ve never heard of it before. It’s dough with a strikingly dark colour due to the activated charcoal it contains. But don’t worry, it’s just as light and airy in texture. Let the enthusiastic team advise you on a matching wine and your Italian evening will be complete!
