Discover the Statenkwartier
The Statenkwartier is located in the centre of Maastricht, between the city centre and the Sphinxkwartier. It is a real residential area, but you will also find special monuments, surprising cultural institutions and nice local shops. A nice mix of history, architecture and culture. Worth strolling through, away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre.
Student hotspot
If you walk through the Statenkwartier during the week, you will come across many students. Not surprisingly, as this part of town is home to several universities and colleges. Like FASOS, with a lush courtyard garden where all kinds of activities are organised for students. You have to know it, otherwise you will walk right past it! On the Memorial Square is the Maastricht Institute of Arts, Maastricht's art academy. Don't skip the square itself either. Here you will find 14 steel columns with photos telling the history of World War II in Maastricht.
Monasteries
The Statenkwartier has an authentic Maastricht atmosphere and is a meeting place for students, locals and visitors. If you like historical architecture, this is the place to be. The Statenkwartier has over 150 national monuments, including a large number of monasteries. Many monasteries have been given a new purpose in recent decades. The largest monastery, the Kruisherenklooster, has been transformed into a luxury design hotel. A large number of other monasteries are used as university buildings.

Marres, House for Contemporary Culture
An unmissable gem in the Statenkwartier is Marres, House for Contemporary Culture. This museum is housed in a historic building that was the home of three generations of the Maastricht brewing family Marres in the 20th century. Marres offers changing contemporary art exhibitions, lectures, performances and projects of international standard. Also visit the amazing Marres Kitchen restaurant, which sits next to the museum in the historic house, or escape the crowds in the lush city garden.

St Lambert's Church
On the edge of the Statenkwartier flaunts the Sint-Lambertuskerk, also called the 'Maastricht Sacré-Cœur' because of its striking towers. You can only admire the church from the outside, as it has been a private residence since 2016.

Must-sees in the Statenkwartier
Shopping in the Statenkwartier
Grote Gracht and Brusselsestraat are the main shopping streets in Statenkwartier. You will find several local shops here, as well as nice places for lunch (to-go). A golden tip in the Statenkwartier is Bakkerij Mathieu Hermans. One of the best addresses for a delicious Limburg flan.
