The former Hall of Fame | Sphinx Factory

In the Sphinx Quarter, between the historic fortifications and the Frontenpark, lies a long wall covered in graffiti. This wall is the last visible remnant of the former Hall of Fame: the first place in Maastricht where graffiti and street art artists were able to work legally.

The birth of a creative meeting place
After the Sphinxfabriek vacated this part of the site, the location was given a new purpose. The former Hall of Fame developed into an important meeting place for artists and street art enthusiasts. For years, new works of art continued to appear here, with existing graffiti often being painted over. In this way, the wall evolved into a colourful whole featuring dozens of layers of paint and stories.

A wall steeped in history
When the area was redeveloped into Frontenpark, the Hall of Fame moved to the new Hall of Fame. The painted wall remained behind and still serves as a reminder of the place where Maastricht’s street art culture began. The peeling layers of paint show how different generations of artists have left their mark here.

Street art in layers
The wall illustrates how street art is constantly changing. For years, new artworks were painted over older ones, creating a colourful mosaic of paint, drawings and text. It is precisely these many layers that still make the former Hall of Fame a special place for lovers of street art and urban culture.
