Open Monumentendag Maastricht

The theme is ‘Resilient heritage – in times of uncertainty’. The focus is on how monuments are preserved, restored and adapted to change. This includes buildings being given a new purpose, damage caused by climate change and extreme weather, and the importance of skilled craftspeople passing on their knowledge of restoration.

Special venues open their doors
In Maastricht, nearly fifty monuments and heritage sites are expected to open their doors. Visitors will be able to explore buildings that are normally inaccessible or only accessible to a limited extent. There will also be guided tours and other activities. Advance booking is required for some parts of the programme. Further details will be added to the official Maastricht page for Open Monument Day.

Sint Pieter Quarry
One well-known activity is a visit to Groeve Sint Pieter. Accompanied by a guide, you’ll explore a historic marl quarry that is considered the predecessor of the ENCI quarry. The area around Hoeve Lichtenberg also features. This site is normally closed to the public but can be visited free of charge during Open Monument Day.

The City Parade
This Sunday coincides with De Stadsparade, which is part of the Maastricht Year celebrations. As a result, Maastricht will be celebrating its past in a variety of ways that day: behind the doors of historic buildings and out on the streets, where historical stories will come to life through performances and a parade.
