Carnival in Maastricht
Carnival, also called Vastelaovend in Limburg dialect, is Maastricht's most exuberant celebration. It will be celebrated in 2026 on Sunday 15 February, Monday 16 February and Tuesday 17 February, but traditional festivities take place even before those dates. We will be happy to tell you all about the traditions and customs associated with carnival.
Carnival traditions
The eleventh-of-the-same
November 11 is the date when the carnival season opens every year in Limburg.
Prince Carnival
Prince Carnival of Maastricht is chosen every year in secret by a triumvirate of the carnival association De Tempeleers. During the Prince's proclamation, the new "prince of fools" is proclaimed and unmasked for all to see on the Market Square.
Key transfer
The Saturday before Carnival, the Prince receives the key to the city from the hands of the mayor at 15:11. With this, the mayor symbolically transfers power to him for three days.

Zate Hermeniekes
These groups provide the carnival music. Carnival in Maastricht largely takes place on the streets, which is where most Zate Hermeniekes can be found.
Carnival procession 'Boonte Störrem'
On Sunday, the carnival parade organised by the city carnival association De Tempeleers takes place. The parade consists of a colourful collection of often themed floats, hermeniekes, carnival groups and associations.
Pekske
During the year, Maastricht people are known for being 'well-dressed'. During carnival, they are especially 'well-dressed'. Maastricht people always go for a fully equipped 'pekske', often with an accompanying act. Because even during carnival, Maastricht is the city of good taste.
