Monique Bisscheroux
Two years after her death, the Maastricht-based artist Monique Bisscheroux is the focus of a special exhibition at Artichoque Art Gallery. Under the title ‘She was like fire’, a selection of her paintings is brought together with work by five artists who inspired her.

Bisscheroux’s work is characterised by a powerful, recognisable visual language in which women and girls take centre stage. Her paintings depict female figures in a variety of settings and situations. Vulnerability, loneliness, strength and self-awareness come together in her work.

With layered colours, expressive brushstrokes and a distinctive palette of reds, browns and blacks, she developed a style all of her own. She worked with acrylics, egg tempera and homemade pigments, amongst other media.

Artists who inspired her
Alongside Bisscheroux’s work, the exhibition also features artworks by five artists she admired: Atelier Les Deux Garçons, Bernard Heesen, Corjan Nodelijk, Jurgen Reichert and Hans van der Weijden. This combination highlights the art and artists that inspired her and offers an insight into her personal perspective on art.

opening reception
The exhibition opens on Saturday 14 November with an opening reception from 1.00 pm to 6.00 pm. At 3.00 pm, Marie-Jeanne Bisscheroux, Monique’s sister, will give a welcome speech. The participating artists will also be present during the opening.
