Philzuid - Debussy's La Mer
Saturday 5 December
Get carried away by the power of nature in an atmospheric concert featuring music by Debussy and Rautavaara.
Musical natural beauty
In this special programme, Philzuid pays tribute to composers who were inspired by the beauty and power of nature. Finnish composer Einojuhani Rautavaara captures the magic of the northern landscape in his music, while Claude Debussy created one of the most beloved musical depictions of the sea with La Mer.
From birdsong to raging waves
The programme includes Rautavaara's enchanting Cantus Arcticus, in which recorded bird sounds merge with the orchestra. In addition, acclaimed German violinist Tobias Feldmann will solo in Rautavaara's expressive and virtuoso Violin Concerto.
Debussy's masterpiece
The concert closes with Debussy's iconic La Mer. In three symphonic sketches, he paints a fascinating soundscape of the sea, from rippling movements to powerful waves. A masterpiece of musical impressionism that focuses on atmosphere, colour and imagination.
