The fortress museum is located in the Netherlands' oldest city gate, the Helpoort. The monument dates from 1229 and the entrance to this small but beautiful museum is completely medieval, hidden in the little square next to the gate. The Romans, the Merovingians, the medieval city walls and 17th, 18th and 19th-century fortifications, all these stories are told at the Maastricht Fortress Museum.
