Lucas and Arthur Jussen - World-class piano talent
Lucas and Arthur Jussen are undoubtedly the Netherlands' best-known piano duo. From an early age, these musical brothers have impressed with their virtuosity, musicality and close interplay. Growing up in a musical family (their mother is a flute teacher, their father timpanist with the Radio Philharmonic Orchestra), their path to the concert halls was written in the stars early on.
Their big break came when, aged just 13 and 10, they performed at The Concertgebouw in Amsterdam with a Mozart piano concerto. Since then, their career has gained momentum. They studied with renowned pianists such as Jan Wijn and Maria João Pires, and signed an exclusive contract with the prestigious Deutsche Grammophon label.
International successes
With their recordings of Beethoven, Schubert and Bach, among others, they managed to touch critics and audiences alike. Their debut album even achieved platinum status. Lucas and Arthur also impress on stage worldwide, performing with leading orchestras such as the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the Concertgebouw Orchestra.

A timeless masterpiece
For anyone unfamiliar with Carmina Burana: Carmina Burana is a powerful choral work by German composer Carl Orff, composed in 1937. It is based on medieval poems that deal with themes such as fate, love, wine and the transience of life. The work consists of 25 songs for choir, soloists and orchestra, and is often performed with the iconic O Fortuna, known for its dramatic power. Orff's style is characterised by powerful rhythms and an intense use of orchestral and vocal elements. The piece is appreciated worldwide for its energy and impact.
The soloists
For this large-scale performance of Carmina Burana, four top international soloists will perform alongside the Brabant Choir: Elise Caluwaerts, Raoul Steffani, Miles Mykkanen and Leander Carlier. Soprano Caluwaerts is already singing this favourite work for the seventh time. Steffani was praised by Opernwelt and won several awards. Mykkanen broke through after winning at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions. Carlier recently shone in the TV programme Aria and is part of the Young Talent Program in Brussels.
Why in Maastricht?
The brothers have a strong connection to Maastricht and Limburg, as their parents are from Vaals and Maastricht and their grandparents still live there. They grew up in Hilversum, but regularly went to Limburg from childhood onwards. They describe their family as close-knit, and the Limburg dialect and culture give them a sense of belonging and warmth. Among themselves, the brothers also speak in dialect.
The Burgundian character of Limburg has special meaning for them.
