Former Govermnent Building

In the Jeker Quarter district stands the Former Govermnent Building, a listed building that for many years formed the administrative heart of Limburg. Today, the former provincial government building has been given a new purpose as part of Universiteit Maastricht.

From provincial government building to university
The Former Govermnent Building was built in 1935 as the provincial government building for Limburg. For more than fifty years, important decisions were taken here and it served as the administrative centre of the province.

After the provincial government moved to the current Provincial Government of Limburg, the building was given a new purpose. Today, it houses the Faculty of Law at Universiteit Maastricht . This has given the listed building a new social function, whilst preserving its historic character.

Architecture
The narrow, tall tower, the brick façade and the natural stone details still give the building the stately appearance befitting its original function as a provincial government building.

Architect G.C. Bremer designed the building in the Expressionist brick architectural style and drew inspiration for the tower from the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, Italy. The interior was also designed with great care. Various artists from Limburg contributed to the building’s finishing touches. For example, the Maastricht-based sculptor Charles Vos created reliefs and sculptures that reference the history and identity of Limburg. The glass artists Joep Nicolas and Jan Grégoire also contributed to the interior.

What is there to see?
The Former Govermnent Building is a listed building in which the original architecture has been largely preserved. In particular, the combination of the brick façade, the natural stone details and the narrow, tall tower makes the building a striking example of Expressionist architecture.

Although the building is now used as a university building, its original character has been preserved. As a result, it remains a recognisable reminder of Limburg’s administrative history.
