De Geusselt Stadium is the home ground of MVV Maastricht football club. The club has been playing its home matches here since 1961. The stands are arranged closely around the football pitch and can accommodate around 9,000 supporters. On match days, the stands fill with supporters of the Maastricht football club.
This is where MVV has played since 1961
MVV was founded in 1902 and played its matches for many years on a pitch near the Boschpoort. After more than fifty years, the club moved to the new De Geusselt Stadium.
The first match was played here on 15 January 1961. The stadium wasn’t quite finished at the time. Nevertheless, around 13,000 supporters turned up for the match against Willem II. From that moment on, MVV played its home matches at De Geusselt.
The stadium changed along with it
De Geusselt looked very different in 1961 than it does today. There was an athletics track surrounding the football pitch, and it could accommodate around 18,000 spectators.
During subsequent renovations, the football pitch was reoriented and the athletics track was removed. The stands were moved closer to the pitch. This is how De Geusselt took on the form the stadium has today, with capacity for around 9,000 supporters.
Where does the name De Geusselt come from?
The stadium’s name comes from the area in which it was built. The name ‘Geusselt’ was already in use here before the football stadium was built.
Close to the stadium lies Geusselt Castle, which bears the same name. The castle is much older than the stadium and has a long history of its own.
