Fort Eben-Emael

Just across the Belgian border, a few kilometres from Maastricht, lies Fort Eben-Emael. This enormous fort was once considered one of the most modern defensive structures in Europe. Today, technology, history and compelling stories come together here at a site that played a significant role during the Second World War.

A fortress that seemed impregnable
When Fort Eben-Emael was built in the 1930s, it was designed to be virtually impregnable. With thick concrete walls, an extensive underground network of tunnels and heavy gun turrets, it seemed impossible to capture the fort. Yet, on 10 May 1940, during a surprise attack, it was overrun within a matter of hours. It is precisely this unexpected contrast that makes Fort Eben-Emael such a special place to visit.

Above and below ground
During a visit, you can explore both the extensive fortress grounds and part of the underground network of tunnels. Bunkers, gun turrets and other military installations have largely been preserved and demonstrate just how vast and ingenious this defensive structure was.
