Graanmarkt

The Graanmarkt is now a quiet square next to the Basilica of Our Lady, but centuries ago it was a bustling trading centre. The name refers to the time when grain was traded here, whilst the historic guardhouse still serves as a reminder of the former city gate that once stood here.

A market for grain
In medieval Maastricht, the Grote Markt was not large enough to accommodate all trade. Consequently, different products were allocated their own markets. Grain was traded on the Graanmarkt, where it was easily brought into the city via a unloading quay outside the city gates. Thanks to this favourable location, the square developed into an important centre for the grain trade.

A reminder of the fortified town
The classical-style guardhouse dating from 1786 still stands on the Graanmarkt. It was part of the former Onze-Lieve-Vrouwepoort, one of the gateways to the fortified town. Although the gate itself has disappeared, the guardhouse remains a tangible reminder of Maastricht as it once was.

From trading square to meeting place
Where traders once sold their grain, you’ll now find a charming square with terraces and views of St Mary’s Basilica. The combination of history, architecture and the lively surroundings makes the Graanmarkt a special place to pause and reflect on Maastricht’s past.
