Statue of Limburg sculptor Arthur Spronken found on the square Op de Thermen.

Artist Arthur Spronken (1930-2018) is considered the primal father of Limburg sculptors. A small man making big sculptures. Impressive sculptures, which he did not advertise. In his youth, Spronken was influenced both by his father's and grandfather's horse-love and by the sculptor Paul Schmalbach. He was groomed for the trade, but eventually went to the School of Arts and Crafts in Maastricht, where his teachers included Charles Vos and Harry Koolen.
Arthur Spronken's horse torsos show the dynamics of the body. These dynamics become so important in the later horse torsos that the legs can only be seen as a starting point, the beginning of the movement that takes place in the torso. From 1962, the horse becomes a recurring element in his oeuvre. But it is not a representation of a realistic horse. Spronken focuses entirely on the horse torso. He shows the viewer nothing more than the body, the buttocks and the neck.
