The Miljoenenlijn is a beautiful railway line straight through the South Limburg Hill Country. Board the 100-year-old steam train at Simpelveld Station, let yourself be carried through the enchanting landscape and take a nostalgic trip back in time. Experience the romance of travelling from times gone by and dream away in the luxurious plush of the 1st class carriages.... Don't forget to have your cardboard ticket cut by the conductor! Of course, you can start your journey from any station along the Miljoenenlijn and end it there too.
Simpelveld's large station yard is worth discovering: a bustling place where long coal-filled mine trains once left for the north and passengers embarked on a train ride to faraway European destinations. Did you know that Simpelveld Station is the oldest border railway station in the Netherlands? It is located on the former Aachen-Maastricht railway line, the Netherlands' first international railway line (from 1853)! It is therefore equipped with a large customs office with visiting room and the Royal Military Police also had a station here. Also visit the depot and workshop, where all the rolling stock is maintained by enthusiastic volunteers. Afterwards, enjoy a delicious cup of coffee with Limburg flan in the cosy station restaurant.
Tip: Book one of the special packages and combine your day on the steam train with a visit to, for example, Discovery Museum Kerkrade, a visit to the Brand Beer Brewery in Wijlre, a walk, a sumptuous lunch in station restaurant 'Perron 4' or with a historical tour of the railway yard in Simpelveld.
