Castle Wijlre
Wijlre Castle Country Estate uniquely combines contemporary art and architecture with cultural heritage and nature. Situated in the Limburg hills, the 17th-century castle, the coach house, the gardens and the surrounding park form a special place for reflection and inspiration.
The serene exhibition space at the Hedge House – designed by Wiel Arets – allows the indoors and outdoors to blend seamlessly. A combination of concrete, glass, an orchid greenhouse and a chicken coop.
Outside, discover the intimate garden rooms, bordered by hedges, and sculptures by contemporary artists such as Giuseppe Penone, who created two of his iconic tree sculptures especially for this site.
Since 2015, the country estate has been an independent, public institution, founded on the initiative of art collectors Jo and Marlies Eyck. It runs an annual international programme of exhibitions, public activities and educational initiatives at the intersection of art and nature. Recent exhibitions have featured work by, amongst others, Elspeth Diederix, Petrit Halilaj, Tala Madani, Thierry Oussou, Kerry James Marshall, Otobong Nkanga and Joëlle Tuerlinckx.
