Sint Amorsplein square

Sint Amorsplein is an intimate square in the heart of Maastricht, where outdoor cafés and history come together. In the centre of the square stands the statue of Saint Amor, after whom the square is named. It is a lovely spot to take a break whilst strolling through the city centre.

From chapel to square
The square takes its name from St Amors Chapel, which was built in the Middle Ages on the spot where St Amor is said to have been buried. Although the chapel later disappeared, the name has been retained. In the past, the square was known as the Moesmarkt, where vegetables were sold. It was not until 1911 that it was officially named Sint Amorsplein.

The statue of Saint Amor
The bronze statue of Saint Amor was created in 1951 by the Maastricht-based sculptor Charles Vos. It commemorates the history of the square and remains a striking focal point.

Enjoying the heart of the city
Today, Sint Amorsplein is known for its outdoor cafés and relaxed atmosphere. Whether it’s time for a cup of coffee, lunch or a good glass of wine, the square is a lovely spot to take a break whilst visiting the city centre.

Fun fact
Between 1959 and 1972, every summer during the Petit Paris neighbourhood festival, Sint Amorsplein was temporarily transformed into Place d’Amour. With French street performers, wine terraces and even a miniature Eiffel Tower, the square took on a French flavour for a few days.
